Frequency counter is a commonly used measuring instrument, widely used in research and metrology, industrial production, aerospace, weapons, missiles and other fields. This paper will briefly explain the classification, characteristics and functions of frequency counter.

Electronic counters use electronic methods to measure the number of input pulses in fixed time and display the results in digital form. According to their functions, electronic counters can be divided into three categories:

A universal counter refers to a multi-function counter. It can be used to measure frequency, frequency ratio, period, time interval and accumulative count. If it is equipped with suitable plug-ins, it can also measure phase, voltage and so on.

The main function of frequency counter is to measure frequency and count. The frequency range is very wide, and the counters in the microwave and high frequency range belong to this kind.

The outstanding characteristic of the counter is that it has a microprocessor and has counting function. Besides, it can carry out digital operation and solve complicated equations, and it can rely on program control for measuring, calculating and displaying.

The frequency counter is composed of circuit A, B input channel, time base generation and conversion unit, main gate, control unit, counting and display unit. The basic function of the frequency counter is frequency measurement and time measurement, but when measuring frequency and measuring time, the signal source added to the main gate and control unit is different, and the conversion of measurement function is operated by switches. When accumulating count, the signal added to the control unit is manually measured.

Frequency ratio measurement, cycle measurement and so on are the basic functions of the frequency counter. The signal sent through the input channel is the trigger pulse source of the counting circuit through the main gate entry counting circuit. In order to ensure that the counting circuit works correctly, there are certain requirements for the waveform and polarity of the signal. The amplitude of input signal is different and the waveform is different. It is necessary to amplify and amplify the signal by means of input channel, and turn it into a counting pulse signal that accords with the requirement of main gate. There are 2 ways of input channel. Because of the different roles of the two channels in testing, they also have their own characteristics.
